The used vehicle market is red hot, up some 17% in the third quarter of 2020.
And with gasoline prices only up slightly since the start of the pandemic, consumers are still looking to purchase pickup trucks as their “new to you” vehicles of choice.
But with dozens of makes and models to choose from, which pre-owned truck is right for you under $20,000? How about the best-used truck under $15,000?
It’s a tough call since demand is pushing even the price of usually lower-cost models higher and higher.
However, there are some sure bets that experts agree are great, reliable used trucks —even if you have to spend a little more.
In the following article, we’ll pick four vehicles, typically priced under $20,000, that are worth a look-see.
1. Toyota Tundra
When you look at a list of the most reliable used pickup trucks, the Toyota Tundra is on them all. The 4.7-liter V-8 is built to last and delivers major torque. It’ll tow anything short of a double-wide and is a great-looking truck to boot. And who doesn’t love that retractable rear window?
Unfortunately, the problem with the Tundra is finding one under 100,000 miles. People tend to hold onto them because they are such a reliable ride.
But check the inventory on pre-owned websites; these much-loved beasts are out there for under $20,000 if you look hard enough.
2. Chevrolet Silverado 1500
You can always count on the Silverado to get work done and deliver a smooth ride. The engines, both the 4.8- and 5.3-liter V-8 varieties, offer up OK fuel efficiency, and you can easily pick what sort of drive train you’d prefer with so many Silverados on the road.
And with all the Silverados floating around, there are plentiful parts out there if something goes wrong.
But maybe the best thing about these trucks is the comfortable interior. The cab is perfect for plowing or the long haul.
3. Ford Super Duty
For many reasons, the F-250 and F-350 are the work truck of choice for much of America. With 411-horsepower and a 6.2-liter V-8, the Super Duty has a beast of an engine. These bad boys can handle 15,800 pounds a tow and are considered one of the class’s hardest workers.
But you’ll want to inspect what maintenance has been done on a Super Duty before you purchase. Some Ford trucks are notorious for being in the garage more than on the road.
4. Honda Ridgeline
The dark horse on this list, a pre-owned Honda Ridgeline looks dorky as hell but is reliable as the sunrise. These roomy and comfortable passenger trucks are great on fuel and have great pick-up. Packaged with an innovative tailgate design, the truck also features an in-bed trunk.
However, the truck isn’t great for towing and maxes out at about 5,000 lbs. since it rides on a mini-van chasey.
Want a Pre-Owned Truck Under $15,000?
If you’re not looking to break the bank, choose the classic Toyota Tacoma to spend $15,000 or less on a pre-owned truck.
The always dependable Tacoma can handle high-mileage and is available in dozens of different modifications. Many of these used trucks are in great condition and come on the market as people outgrow the cab or need more towing capacity.
Truly, there’s a Tacoma out there for everybody.
